Bert has a well-equipped studio, where each of his sculptures is created as a unique piece. Sometimes he explores side paths and experiments with something new, but in the end he always returns to his characteristic visual language. The human figure is at the heart of his work. Rough and unpolished, with lumps of clay forcefully pushed into place, Nijenhuis builds up their distinctive postures. From anger, disappointment, despair, melancholy, and foolishness, to relief, joy, and pride, every state of mind can be brought to life in clay. He favors the diagonal, which allows him to give his figures dynamism. Bert embraces plasticity, the alternating play of volume and direction that is best experienced when walking around his sculptures.
