The Netherlands was in the midst of reconstruction and Germany was also experiencing shortages of foodstuffs such as coffee, tea, cigarettes, butter and salt. As a result, residents of the rural border area sought their own solutions and a prohibited trade between Dutch and German residents developed.

Smuggling took place in the evening and night to reduce the chances of being caught. If you were caught, the action was tough, because the customs officers, called commissaires, were very fanatical. The contraband was taken away and one disappeared into the cage for several days!
