Art lovers and curious explorers will discover inspiring exhibitions in Enschede. Museums and art galleries contribute to a rich cultural life worth exploring. Experience the arts during your stay and be sure to include the following sights.

The museums of Enschede

Rijksmuseum Twenthe

Enschede has two museums, both located in Culture park Roombeek. Visit Rijksmuseum Twenthe for a peek into the richest art collection of the Eastern Netherlands. Each exhibition learns us more about the past or the present, often in a combination of Dutch masters and thrilling modern artworks. In addition to the permanent collection, the museum presents a dozen temporary art exhibitions a year. View their website for the current exhibitions.

De Museumfabriek

The second museum at Culture park Roombeek that is worth is a visit is De Museumfabriek. It is a lovely place for everyone who is young at heart. All exhibitions center around the way nature, culture, science and technology are connected. Learning through experiments is key at De Museumfabriek. Dive into the temporary exhibitions, explore actively and try your hand at creating things yourself. Not surprisingly, this interactive museum is a gem for families with kids.

Museum Buurtspoorweg

A third museum is found outside of Enschede, in the town of Boekelo. Or, to be more precise, in the towns of both Boekelo and Haaksbergen. Museum Buurtspoorweg is a unique museum. Its showpiece is an old steam train. A ride from Boekelo to Haaksbergen is a visit's true highlight. The volunteers also love to treat visitors to stories about this way of travel. Be sure to visit the yards and the train stations as well. Every Sunday, the steam train carries enthusiastic rail passengers of all ages between the villages.

Art galleries in Enschede

Enschede has a few dozen art galleries in a range of sizes. Many artists have their own gallery at their workshop. Some galleries are independent, like Concordia and Fotogalerie Objektief in the city center, and TETEM gallery in Roombeek culture park.

TETEM

Art gallery TETEM is unique in that it puts media art on pedestal. Their exhibitions are always related to topical themes in society. Art and society are linked. Trends in media art are shown through site-specific and interactive installations, video, light and sound. Cross overs with technology, science, design, games and film are common. TETEM collaborates with artists and curators from all over the world. Alongside the exhibitions, talkshows, performances, lectures and workshops enable visitors to give even more meaning to their visit.
