Exhibition Paul Citroen in the Synagogue
Museum de Fundatie is a guest at the synagogue in Enschede with artworks by Paul Citroen.
Museum de Fundatie will showcase artworks by artist Paul Citroen at the Synagogue in Enschede from March 12 to September 28.
A selection of Paul Citroen’s works will be on display in the Enschede Synagogue, including recently added pieces to the Provincial art collection. These works are now being shown to the public for the first time.
Citroen specialized in portraits, a genre he practiced throughout his life. Since 1971, more than 3,000 of his works have been included in the Overijssel collection, managed by Museum de Fundatie. Self-portraits played a significant role in his oeuvre. For Citroen, they were a means of self-reflection, comparable to keeping a diary. During World War II, when he had to go into hiding due to his Jewish background, he primarily used his family as models. During this time, his wife, daughter, and himself often posed for his paintings and drawings.
Family member Roelof Citroen was a silversmith. The synagogue owns several religious silver objects by Roelof Citroen, which will also be on display during the exhibition.
Come and view these artworks, presented to the public by the museum for the first time.
