Volkspark
The oldest Volkspark in the Netherlands, near the centre of Enschede.
Volksparksingel/Parkweg
There are several works of art in the park, including Mari Andriessen's war memorial, centrepiece of the annual May 4 commemoration.
The park covers 15 hectares and was for the most part designed by Dirk Wattez. This architect and later his son Pieter (P.H.) designed more gardens at Twente estates.
The Volkspark was laid out as a park in 1872. The layout was made possible by a bequest from H.J. van Heek (1814-1872). His intention was to leave the community a park where textile workers could relax with their families in their free time.
Dogs must be kept on a leash in the park.
